Top 50 Selling OOP Titles in December

The rules for the list are:  Amazon must not have it as available, or any TOOS or expectations of shipping time. In addition, no user made pages, no aisan versions (no matter if they are R1 or R0), no collections (such as Friends Seasons 1-10), and no side-by-sides, back-to-backs, or multipacks in any form. Boxed sets are acceptable, such as Farscape Season 1. Also, for congruency's sake, MMM has to have it announced as discontinued. It is ok if other stores outside Amazon has it for sale (i.e. dvdempire, dvdplanet, etc.).

CAVEAT: These numbers fluctuate every hour or so and this is only to be considered as a snapshot of Amazon at the particular time of this writing. Even as I write this, some variations are likely to occur, so by the time it gets published, you will see some changes in numbers and perhaps even place standings as I have them listed. It is also likely to stand that numbers that seemingly jumped up might be indicative of a recent sale, rather than a constant. If overall website sales on Amazon are slower than other periods of the year, then it is also likely that a sale would increase the rank double or more.

Amazon's Best Selling OOP List

LIST NOTES: Dr. Syn: Scarecrow of Romney Marsh are no longer available on Amazon, however, MMM maintains their "outness", so they will not be included in this list. Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth is removed from the list due to Amazon's restock and that MMM now declares it as "out". North By Northwest has been removed from the list due to Amazon having it "in stock". Disney's Lady and the Tramp has been removed due to Amazon now stating it is "Temporarily Out of Stock" with the ability to purchase.

#50) Mio in the Land of Faraway - Anhor Bay's release of this mythological classic has been discontinued for a while now and is quite sought after. There are 2 listings, but I believe one is a user made page as the studio represented states "Miramax/Anchor Bay". The current sales rank is #90,360.

#49) Quai des Orfevres - From the Criterion Collection, this was one of their latest OOP titles which is no longer available. As with ANY Criterion, beware of bootlegs (there is no such thing as a Criterion import). Current rank is #60,829 down from #50,848.

#48) The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh - The now defunct company NoShame Films exquisite release of this cult film from director Sergio Martino is increasingly become difficult to find. Current rank is #56,558 up from #65,936.

#47) Peter Pan (starring Mary Martin) - One of the classic staples in the OOP genre of DVDs. This has maintained a favorite by families and with a short printing from GoodTimes, this title quickly became one of the most sought after DVDs. Current sales rank is #50,963.

#46) Mystery Science Theater Collection #9 although not as popular as #10, it still is in consistent demand, and to some degree has become more expensive. Currently ranks are #41, 819 up from #42,582.

#45) Farscape Season 1, Vol. 1 - Premiere/I, E.T. - Farscape has been a continual best seller and remains in high demand. Although some of the more lofty sets are great sellers, the lower priced titles are currently better movers. Currently ranked at #37,202 down from #22,678.

#44) Watership Down is always popular, however, it recently has dropped considerably. The re-release in a deluxe edition surely slowed this one down. It is currently ranked at #35, 084, down from #18,524.

#43)Beastmaster - The Complete Series - ADV released the series in 3 different sets, which were long out of print. Then came a complete series in one boxed set. But ADV's rights for release were torn from their hands at the moment of release, only allowing a limited amount into the stores. These quickly became collectibles and dried up pretty quick. Current sales rank is #33,068.

#42) Barfly - A rare Warner Brothers title to get released, then discontinued only to never see a new version come out. This has been discontinued for over 4 years now and no sign of a re-release in sight. In original snap case only. Current sales rank is #31,820

#41) Mystery Science Theater Collection #10 remains a popular item, although has somewhat fallen from grace as Rhino issued its 10.2 set. However, this set still contains the Godzilla feature which remains unavailable and only through this set. Current rank is #26,208 up from #48,667.

#40) Danielle Steel's Zoya Part 1 & 2 - Released from Anchor Bay with about 12 different titles under the Danielle Steel banner, most of which are out of print with varying popularity. Popularity is mainting consistency with new copies drying up quickly, raising the price on new copies. Current sales rank of #25,652 down from #17,170.

#39)  Death Hunt - The great action flick released by Anchor Bay. This "based-on-a-true-story drama stars Charles Bronson who defends his life in an attempt to survive the cold mountains. Current rank is #24,682 up from #34,019.

#38)  Peter Brook's Mahabharata is alive and well despite its asking price. Quite rare and very desireable for its well depicted version of the sacred texts of India. Beware of "Greek" imports. Current rank is #23,340 up from #26,374.

#37) Walk on the Wild Side. An early Jane Fonda film from Sony Pictures. Some interest, but with Sony films cropping up in discount bins, you may not see prices get too much of an influx - add that with an obscure piece of cinema. Current rank is #19,371 up from #22,884.

#36) Last House on the Left - Wes Cravens early and controversial piece remains a hard to watch horror movie that inspired and influenced so many films following its wake. MGM discontinues this title. Current rank is #18,782 down from #7,259.

#35) The Tenant. Early work from Roman Polanski starring Isabelle Adjani. Current rank is #18,889 down from #12,836.

#34)  Exotica. Starring Mia Kirshner (The L Word), and directed by Atom Egoyan. Artistic cinema has its place with select audience which attributes this titles slow pace. Current rank is #17,879 up from #26,443.

#33)  Ready to Wear, Robert Altman's film on the fashion industry is popular despite mixed reviews. Current rank is #17,475 up from #19,723.

#32)  Long Way Round. Still a good mover. Copies for this title has become sckeptical and uncertain. With some third party sellers offering either bootlegs or Canadian versions (3-disc edition), thus skewing prices and accuracy of rarity. As of this writing, only new copies are being sold for a title thats been out of print for almost a year. Bootlegging, misleading sellers with Canadian or UK versions selling under the guise of an R1 or 3-disc version has corrupted these sales, thus bringing prices way down along with sales rank. I addition, a new version is set for release, an 8-disc version. Current rank is #17,005 down from #11,209.

#31)  Play It Again, Sam - The non-Woody Allen-directed film is considered one of his best works (based on his own published writings). Since its discontinuation, it has been slowly moving up, however, new copies continue to find their way into the light. Current sales rank is #16,420 up from #20,169.

#30) Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer. Continues to be a popular seller, as it is very difficult to find sealed copies. However, many used copies keep these prices down and sales rank up. This title is currently ranked at #15,549 up from #26,543.

#29) Soylent Green has been a popular sci-fi cult film for years. The death of Charlton Heston has spiked all of the Heston titles. This version of Soylent Green is a great piece to have in original snap case, however, the newer edition is keeping it prices at bay. Current rank is #15,359 up from #15,474.

#28)Oldboy (3-disc Limited Edition) A set that has excited fans since its release, coupled with the fact that its a limited edition. However, this has gone through periods of questionability. Now, it appears to be no longer available. With Tartan now defunct, perhaps it will remain out of print. Current rank is #15,338.

#27)  The Odyssey - The Hallmark Entertainment adventure based on the Homer Epic classic. Current rank is #15,324 up from #15,842.

#26)   Wings of Desire - The Wim Wenders classic was discontinued by MGM and stands as a great seller. Current sales rank is #14,170 down from #11,119.

#25)  This is America, Charlie Brown - Since Paramount has lost the rights to the Peanuts gang, Warner has picked up the slack with their deluxe releases. This title, developed in the late '80's, became a quick favorite among children who could learn and have fun about American history. A 2-disc set from Paramount, now out of print. Current sales rank is #14,315.

#24) Chronological Donald Volume 3 - One of the hottest Walt Disney Treasues set since The Complete Goofy. Chronological Donald 3 was limited to only 50,000 copies and very quickly went out of print. One does not realize the amount of Donald Duck fans until they are deprived of their hero. Current sales rank is #12,325.

#23) Little Nemo. This is both a popular kids classic and animation lovers. Perhaps summer is not the best time for this seller, however, it still remains a popular and hard to find title. Current rank is #12,067 up from #17,797.

#22) Farscape - The Complete Season 1. The recent sale on a number of brand new copies of has catapulted this set to the top ten, again. More third party members have joined in with new copies, once again, slashing prices to retail costs, of this once luxurious piece on the OOP totem. Expect to see the ranks wave up and down on the currents. Current rank is#11,267 down from #5,047 .

#21) Love Me If You Dare, the French film starring Academy Award Winner Marion Cotillard. Recently discontinued from Paramount Pictures remains a favorite.  Current rank is #11,308 up from #15,820.

#20) Brassed Off. Another title that seemingly has copies coming out of the woodwork and prices are always competitive keeping it from moving too far from retail. Ewan McGregor early piece is praised by virtually every reviewer. This was hot for a while, but has slid somewhat. Current rank is #10,510 up from #14,990.

#19) Rear Window, the Alfred Hitchcock classic, starring Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly. This has since been re-released in the Legends series from Universal. Current rank is #9,721 down from #8,512.

#18) America: Freedom to Facist remains in the top 20. One of the more obscure titles released from Cinema Epoch, but continues to show a strong sales rank. It should be noted that this item was not released in a keep case, but released in a paper sleeve. Current rank is #8,661 down from #3,746.

#17) The Jason Bourne Collection which has been a hot seller since its release last Christmas. A quick sell out made sales easy for third party sellers despite the number of copies available. It is slowly drying up in number of copies. Be leary of eBay as there are bootleg/asian versions of this set using stock photos. Current rank is #8,685 down from #8,591.

#16) Restoration. The exotic period piece from director Michael Hoffman. A popular film, however, sales comes in waves depending on the prices. But new copies continually crop up. Current rank is #7,298 up from #26,923.

#15) My Favorite Year enters the list. A release from Warner Brothers Home Video. The current sales rank is #7,016 down from #4,472.

#14) Gone With the Wind (2-disc edition) The classic Warner Brothers title is discontinued at this time. There are multiple versions, however, still, all of them are out of print. Current sales rank is #6,535.

#13)  Beautiful Girls moves out of the top 10, despite its rise in sales. This great comedy remains a favorite among collectors and movie fans justifying its popularity. Current rank is #4,651 down from #1,993.

#12)  The Nightmare Before Christmas. Even in the summer, this popular, and now somewhat cultish film, continues to be a fan favorite with its darkly humorous take on the Christmas lore. Although it has a very good sales rank, pricing is on a seasonal basis and, unless a re-release is announced, expect these prices to go back up during the Halloween and Christmas seasons. Expect to see this slide more due to the re-release and the limited edition. Current rank is #4,521 down from #2,207.

#11) Little Mermaid 2. Despite increase in rank, prices remain close to what it was last time. Still continued to be a hot seller is keeps itself in the top 10. Current rank is #4,100 down from #2,343.

 The Top 10

#10)  The Beatles Yellow Submarine continues to sale the stormy seas and is one of the better titles to own in this list. There are still too many copies to keep it from getting to far out, even for used copies, however, new copies are getting scarcer and scarcer, so you might see a wider gap between the two.  Current rank is #3,331 down from 1,281.

#9) Pinocchio, one of Disney's classic films continues to be one of the top sellers in the list. Although prices are stable in the high 20's, the number of copies continue to get scarce. It has been discontinued for some time now, so there is some due anticipation for a re-release. This edition was released both in "Gold" and "Limited Edition" banners, both with same UPC and content, just different package art. Current rank is #3,313 down from #536.

#8)  Alice in Wonderland (Masterpiece Edition). Entering into the top ten ousting The Nightmare Before Christmas with its re-release is the classic animated film based on the Lewis Carrol tale. This was the first Disney release with the Masterpiece banner I believe. Sales ranks are 2,627 down from #1,465.

#7)  Wizard of Oz - Entering into the list for the first time and in the top ten is one of the most treasured Hollywood film ever produced is also one of the most desireable out of print title. Released in 1939 from the same director of Gone With the Wind in the same year! Truly a remarkable feat to have two all-time classics under your belt in the same year. Current rank is #1,996 down from #551.

#6) Mystery Science Theater 3000: 20th Anniversary Edition [Limited Edition] - This was the first Shout! Factory release of the MST clan in a 4-disc boxed set complete with little trinkets and put together in a tin to complete the experience. This was sold out in pre-orders by the distributors and exceeded Shout Factory's expectations. These quickly sold out in about a months time. Current sales rank is #1,876.

#5) A Bronx Tale. Robert DeNiro's directorial debut comes with experience in the field to create a first rate crime thriller. Although released in a boxed set (also OOP), this version is still a great seller, but large quantities keeps it from becoming too rare or expensive.  Current rank is #1,705 down from #765.

#4) Bambi, again, one of my personal favorites, is discontinued and this probably wont get released for some time. With nearly 100 copies currently being offered, one has the luxury of waiting as if it were still in print. Current rank is #1,187 down from #1,113.

#3)  Snow White has jumped #5 from the #3 slot this time around. Right now the price seems just about right. There are plenty of copies to keep the title from getting too expensive. Current rank is #692 down from #169

#2) The Lion King remains on top contender as, appropriately, The King of OOP. Lion King has more copies for sale giving it the edge with reduced prices. Current rank is #460 down from #102

#1) Beauty and the Beast. Coming in the second spot is Beauty and the Beast. Currently there are 51 copies with prices starting at 24.99 for a used and new at 40. These are equally hot on eBay, however, it is difficult to get too much more than that due to the number of copies that circulate. Current rank is #256 down from #108.
