Reviews of 2 Flesh Eating Films

I was at the video store to see if they had Sister of Ursula for rent, and in my perusal, I happen to come across the Sexual Parasite, so I grabbed that one as well as I heard a few good things about it. What I did not realize until after I had seen the movies were they they were nearly identical in their ways of killing, but one from a female, and one from a male. This sparked some curiosity within as how it happens that I rent these movies at the same time without realizing their similarities.
These are extreme types of sexploitation films where the first I watched was Sexual Parasite, which is actually the name given to the package, and not the film, for reasons understood. The real title called “Killer Pussy”, which would make customers uncomfortable seeing such a title, nor would retail outlets even consider placing this on their shelves. It has too much porno content associated with it. It is not a porn, but I would subjugate it to a sortcore horror film.
The story is relatively simple with cheap production, although on a whole it works in its own mysterious ways. It sets out with a group of expeditioners who capture a rare fish only to find the local High Priest to tell them to get rid of it as it is a cursed fish and will bring them all harm. Disbelieving in the local folklore, the expeditioners and the priest fight over the container with the fish, while the female explorer sits on the package to prevent from the Priest taking it. Little does she know, the fish ends up eating through the package and right up her wahoo. This effectively kills her.
A year later, a group of teenagers, all primed for a great weekend travel in similar circles, when their car breaks down. They enter a nearby cellar which is furnished with alcohol, music, bed and bath, conveniently. The women are primed for sexual flirtation, as you can see they are all big breasted and wearing practically nothing already. The guys take this in stride, but know it will come in there favor at the right opportunity.
One of the girls decides to take a bath, which is a very nice, large bathroom, and cleaner than the rest of the area. While bathing, a woman comes into the room only dressed in plastic (can you say Laura Palmer?). The woman in plastic attempts to seduce her and out goes the parasite from one body to the other.
What happens the woman in plastic is hard to say at this point. But it’s a moot one at that, as the others start to wonder where the girl taking a bath is (they don’t dispute the fact she wanted to take a bath and that she found one to begin with). One of the guys goes and looks for her and then she seduces him. As one would guess soon enough, after all the nudity and sex, the time is ready for the parasite to come swooping down from her innards to chomp on his penis.
More of this goes on with intervals of sex with the remaining members (haha…dude, I said "member").
Overall, this is a low budget wanker that works better on mythological levels than playing it out on the screen. The vagina dentata are folklores told as “cautionary tales” which are more relevant stories in their own form, but even here, it seems merely an excuse for lots of nudity and gore.
Let me get this straight, I am all for nudity and gore in a film, but when a film is stagnant because of the nudity and gore, then it gets redundant and no longer serves the audience.
Now on the flip side, we have a more sophisticated thriller involving various murders, a seemingly psychotic woman named Ursula, and many happy, horny hotel guests. Sister of Ursula, released by Severin Films always takes care in selecting the most delicious pieces of sordid sleaze available in the world’s trashcans of cinema yesteryear. That might be a harsher statement than I intend it to sound, as I have watched all of their releases so far and find (most) of them to be enjoyable and appreciable on some level, although not always in the traditional intellectual way.
Opposite the Sexual Parasite film, in which a teething vagina sets out to kill by chomping at the bit, Sister of Ursula is doing the killing with a wooden penis, killing off the whores in the hotel by having vicious sex, leaving their bloody bodies to be found by unsuspecting people.
As I said, it is more sophisticated, not only in the direction of the film, the acting is higher quality, and it does stir the imagination. The story leads you in various directions as to who might be the killer.
My biggest problem with the film was that it was not as sleazy as I expected it to be. It was considerably tame (all things considered, of course). And maybe for good reasons, that it helps move the story, if nothing else. With that said, it is definitely a fun and strange movie that is worth viewing. Certainly if you are collecting the Severin line of films, you will want to pick this one up. There is a lengthy interview in the special features with the director that rounds this DVD up.
So is Ursula a cautionary tale? No, its not. Its telling a completely different story and has more psychological components than mythological. But together as a pair, it is powerful combo. That they were released very close each other is also a strange coincidence, which i will leave to you to figure out the symbolic meanings of that.
