Exploring the Trends of Steelbook and Lenticular Cases
The recent surge of alternative packaging has created interest among collector's where we are seeing more and more of them. Steelbooks are one of the more popular forms of packaging that we are seeing in higher frequency, but still continue to be in the realm of collectors edition or limited editions. Perhaps due to the higher cost of production might make these less available overall, however, there are enough out there at the moment to satisfy most connoisseurs of the DVD collector. The recent release of steelbooks have since been discontinued according to MMM. They are all still available for purchase at most places, however, I thought I would report that they are probably no longer being manufactured. Lenticulars are the popular counterpart which was started back from Best Buy with Batman (I believe to be the first, if not one of the first version). A handful of those also has been discontinued. So starting with Steelbooks, I want to give a more comprehensive listing than just the ones recently discontinued:
Cast Away (Special Edition Steelbook)
The Day After Tomorrow (Collector's Edition Steelbook)
Die Hard (Special Edition Steelbook)
Fight Club (Collector's Edition Steelbook)

X-Men 1.5 (Best Buy Exclusive Collector's Edition Steelbook)
X-Men: The Last Stand - Limited Collector's Edition Tin - Widescreen Edition - I am not sure if this is the correct edition, but there is a Futureshop exclusive Steelbook. This refers to a "metal tin", while there was a release of the metal tin as well as a Target Exclusive Metal Tin for the same film.
Ice Age 2 LE Steelbook Futureshop Exclusive
300 Future Shop Special Edition Steelbook
Appleseed (Limited Collector's Edition with Metal Case & Action Figure)
The Boondock Saints - Unrated (Two-Disc Special Edition)

Ok, for those that want to shop there, there are tons more that I could list here, but it would be worthwhile for you to browse the list itself as there are too many and would take away from the point of this article at this time. So here are two links, one to the UK site and one to the Germany site. The UK site I have searched for "Definitive Editions" as they appear as steelbooks, however, not listed as such besides the few that I have put down. Amazon.UK Steelbooks Amazon.DE Steelbooks

I want to thank forum member hindolio for his great list of steelbooks and lenticulars at dvdafficionado which helped fill out some gaps to make this a more comprehensive list. While some items are listed as discontinued, many are still available. Any and all product info are subject to change without notification. Like The Black Stallion (!?!?!?!?!) Also thank you thedvdmuseum for your witty Tri-Store Exclusive pic of Shark Week.
